OScan: Smartphone Camera Scans for Oral Cancer

OScan is an inexpensive screening tool that mounts on a conventional camera telephone and enables minimally skilled health workers to scan the mouth for oral lesions and transmit images wirelessly to dentists and oral surgeons. The device contains a bite guide that holds the mouth open while it scans the oral cavity (Figure 4).

The OScan device allows patients in rural areas around the world to get screened (and hopefully treated) early in their disease, when they can have the best outcomes. The device can also be used to educate communities about the need for oral hygiene.[17]
