Evidence is scant when it comes to how physicians use music in their practice. One study estimated surgeons played music between 62% and 72% of the time in the operating room, and surgical teams often credit music with helping them relax, increase focus, and improve mood.
Self-selected music can also help reduce anxiety and pain for patients if they listen to it before, during, and after surgery.
But some on the surgical team find music distracting and disruptive in communicating during procedures.
