In the United States, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) result in up to 600,000 hospitalizations per year, and nearly 50,000 individuals die annually as a result of PE. Hip arthroplasty, knee arthroplasty, and hip fracture orthopedic surgeries are strongly associated with a risk of developing DVT. Most thromboembolic events after elective orthopedic surgery are reported to develop during the first to sixth postoperative weeks.[9,10,11]
