During a recent 3-year span, almost 75% of workplace violence took place in a healthcare setting. That percentage is close to the proportion of emergency room physicians who were the target of workplace violence in the past year.
Healthcare workers in psychiatric and home-based settings also report frequent incidents of violence, as well as family physicians, but the data are limited for that group, according to a recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The authors state that incidents of workplace violence for healthcare workers are underreported and little information on how to deal with this issue is taught in medical or nursing school.
