Conclusion

There are considerable reports alleging an association of harmful absorption effects on vitamins and minerals associated with chronic PPI usage. Most, if not all, of these studies have considerable heterogeneity and cannot exclude potentially confounding variables that might otherwise mitigate the effect attributed to the PPIs. PPIs have revolutionized the management and complications of acid-related disorders with a high margin of safety. Healthcare providers should always evaluate the need for continued PPI therapy. Efforts to reduce the dosing or discontinue the use of PPIs, if no longer needed, must be continually reassessed.
