Reader Poll: Will 'Moon Shot' Initiative Help Cure Cancer?

January 14, 2016

During his State of the Union speech on January 12, President Barack Obama announced a new national initiative to cure cancer. He described it as a “moon shot” that will be led by Vice President Joe Biden, who recently lost his son to brain cancer.

This announcement follows the creation of the National Immunotherapy Coalition, a newly organized group of pharmaceutical, biotech, and academic medicine communities that launched Cancer MoonShot 2020, which focuses on developing a vaccine-based immunotherapy to fight cancer by 2020.

No specific plans to cure cancer were unveiled by Obama during his speech, but he noted that the spending and tax deal passed by Congress in December will increase spending at the National Institutes of Health.
