Pathogenetic Mechanisms

The majority of cases of SJS and TEN are induced by medications, and in such cases, the mechanism has been shown to involve primarily drug-specific cytotoxic T cells[16,17] and natural killer (NK)/T and NK cells.[18] However, the absence of extensive cytotoxic cells on histology specimens suggests that cytotoxicity itself is unlikely to be the only explanation for the widespread apoptosis and that soluble death mediators are also involved.
