A recent study shows that benefits of influenza vaccination may be limited when it comes to healthcare professionals. The study found once the vaccination rate of healthcare workers reached around 50%, there was no further reduction in rate of patients who acquired influenza while at the hospital.
The study author says this is evidence that infection control policies should focus on additional ways to prevent hospital-acquired influenza, such as hand-washing, better screening of patients, and better isolation precautions. He noted the flu vaccine is still a benefit to healthcare workers themselves and should not stop getting vaccinated.
