Since the Affordable Care Act mandated that Medicare payments can be influenced by patient satisfaction surveys, more hospitals are focusing on improving physicians’ bedside manner.

Patients are also responsible for paying more of their healthcare costs, causing them to be pickier about their quality of care.

Research has shown that hospitals that promote compassion have higher patient satisfaction scores. Several medical centers, including the University of Michigan health system and the Cleveland Clinic have experimented with training to improve bedside manner.
