The topic of fatigue in the health care workforce is a Joint Commission Sentinel Event Alert published in 2011 (Joint Com mission, 2011). This project demonstrates one action that can be taken to address the issue of long work hours and the impact on fatigue. When undertaking an innovative pilot, it is important to recognize the importance of change management principles and the complexity of the issue.

Due to the limitations of this pilot, it is not possible to advocate for shorter shifts or the longer 12-hour shifts. The topic warrants further research to determine multiple innovative solutions to the complex issue.
