Conclusions

In this review, true food allergies have been distinguished from intolerances. Some food allergies may be life-threatening and clearly merit increased research into their understanding, management and prevention. Although food intolerances are more innocuous and nebulous to define, the large number of patients with functional disorders indicates that greater efforts to investigate adverse effects of foods in functional disorders are warranted.
