As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just announced that 2 in 5 adults in the United States will develop diabetes in their lifetime,[1] primary prevention may become a key strategic target to address this public health issue. To date, only exercise and weight loss have been recommended to prevent the onset of the disease in patients at risk.
However, nutrition also plays an important role in the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
