This study demonstrated that laparoscopic approach is a safe and effective alternative to open surgery for IBD management. Associated postoperative morbidity was comparable to reported rates after open approach. With growing experience, the rate of laparoscopically managed complex procedures increased, whereas both mean adjusted risks of conversion and severe postoperative morbidity significantly decreased. Because of the several benefits of laparoscopic approach demonstrated in patients with IBD, including improved postoperative outcomes, reduction of adherences, and reduced impact on female fecundity, as compared with the open approach, we can consider that laparoscopy must regarded in 2013 as the gold standard for IBD surgical management.
