Genital herpes infection is ubiquitous and a major contributor to global morbidity and mortality. Several important recent developments have enhanced our understanding of HSV epidemiology, pathogenesis and host immunity. In doing so, they have provided a stronger foundation for the design and implementation of innovative anti-HSV strategies, yet simultaneously have raised new questions that require further elucidation.
