Ian A. Scott, MBBS, FRACP, MHA, is Director of Internal Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology, Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane; Associate Professor of Medicine, University of Queensland, Brisbane; and Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. He practices as a consultant general physician with an interest in noninterventional cardiology and conducts research and teaching in cardiology, health services evaluation, evidence-based medicine, quality improvement, and clinical education.
Dr. Scott's department at Princess Alexandra Hospital has been a national leader in a number of innovations, including multidisciplinary electronic discharge summaries, high-risk wards for patients with conditions or risk factors requiring close supervision and specialized nursing, integrated palliative care service, standardized nurse risk assessment on admission, protocols for rapid recognition of deteriorating patients, criteria-led discharge, clinical service evaluation, bedside clinical hand-over, and discharge case managers. He authored the first Australian guidelines for acute medical assessment and planning units in 2006 and for evidence-based perioperative medicine in 2008. More recently, he has published several studies examining polypharmacy and strategies to discontinue medications in the older population.[1,2,3]
