The high incidence and complex nature of sensitive skin represent a challenge for dermatologists who face an increasing demand for the management of this condition. Because the symptoms of skin sensitivity are mainly subjective and transient, the symptoms' description by subjects with sensitive skin is the best method of diagnosis. To perform studies on sensitive skin,[57] there is a need for standardized patient questionnaires that allow scoring in a reproducible manner and are suited to monitor the evolution of the skin condition. The therapeutic challenges are still debated, but a reduced use of cosmetics or the use of cosmetics with soothing effects and/or with a minimal percentage of irritant substances is necessary.
