Preparing for Patient Questions

When asked whether their offices were engaged in patient education activities involving insurance exchanges, the largest percentage of respondents (25%) said that they "Provide brochures/handouts for patients about insurance exchanges and/or the Affordable Care Act (ACA)." Another 22% said they "Have made sure that members of our office staff are trained specifically on insurance exchanges and/or the ACA and can discuss the exchanges and coverage with patients," whereas 18% said they "Provide links on our Website that direct patients to information about insurance exchanges and/or the ACA."

Fourteen percent of respondents said that they "Provide information for patients on our Website about insurance exchanges and/or the ACA"; 12% answered that they "Have held training sessions for office staff (and/or physicians) about insurance exchanges and/or the ACA so that they can discuss these with patients"; and 9% said they "Actively encourage doctors to ask patients during their visit whether they have any insurance questions."

PCP respondents answered differently, with a larger percentage saying they "Have made sure that members of our office staff are trained specifically on insurance exchanges and/or the ACA and can discuss the exchanges and coverage with patients." And PCPs were least likely to say that they "Actively encourage doctors to ask patients during their visit whether they have any insurance questions" (Figure).
