Tubular Glucose Reabsorption in Diabetes

Renal transport maximum of glucose is appeared to be increased in humans with type 1 diabetes.[40] This regulation can be attributed to tubular glucose transporter's function modification. In alloxan-induced diabetic rats, SGLT2 is increased,[41] and in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, renal GLUT2 is increased too.[42] In a human study by Rahmoune et al., it was reported that SGLT2 mRNA levels and SGLT2 protein, along with GLUT2 mRNA and GLUT2 protein, were significantly elevated in subjects with type 2 diabetes, compared with healthy volunteers. Additionally, data from the same study have shown that type 2 diabetic patients presented a threefold increased renal glucose uptake compared with control group and also hadreduced GLUT1 mRNA levels.[43]
