In this review, we have summarized recent work on the human skin microbiome and highlighted the involvement of microorganisms in skin diseases and the possibilities to develop new treatment strategies. Although these lines of research are still in their infancy and ground-breaking research is needed for the development and validation of such conceptually new topical treatments, it is increasingly apparent that we are at the start of an exciting era for basic biological discovery and translational research in dermatology.
