STM: Moderate-to-Severe Migraine
Moderate-to-severe migraine attacks are generally treated with ergot alkaloids or triptans (Table 3). Ergot alkaloids have been used for many years for migraine but appear less effective than triptans.[63–75] Triptans are the most effective drugs for acute migraines.[76–78] Specific STM agents such as the triptans and ergot preparations (ergotamine and dihydroergotamine) promote relief of migraine but no other pain. These agents appear to act through the serotonin system.
