The influenza pandemics of 1918 and 2009 are a grim reminder of the importance of continuing the fight against influenza. We must examine these pandemics for future implications in pandemic risk assessment and preparedness. Lessons learnt from the 1918 and 2009 influenza pandemics will help in the early detection, prevention and surveillance of influenza virus, which will prepare us for future pandemic situations.
