Conclusion

I believe that the intestinal microbiota will be shown to have important roles in maintaining our health and modulating energy expenditure, inflammation, and resistance or susceptibility to various disease, some gastrointestinal and some not. Bacteria should no longer be regarded as just "bad" guys and we have come a long way since Hippocrates said," All disease begins in the gut"; today he might instead say "Our health is determined by the microbiota in our gut". We are witnessing a paradigm shift in the way we understand health and treat disease and in its center is our microbiota.
