To assist patients before and after bariatric surgery, it is necessary to clearly understand the anatomical and physiological perturbations inherent to each bariatric procedure and their possible complications. These patients need to be advised on the permanent anatomical changes after bariatric surgery and its definitive influence on digestive tract physiology, and after surgery they need to be followed by a multidisciplinary team that include a consultant gastroenterologist. Many long-term 'side effects' of the bariatric surgery should be included in the informed consent and managed properly.
