New guidelines for the management of UTI in children from NICE in the UK in 2007 and from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in 2011 challenged older views and advocated for a more selective and evidenced approach. The same attitude is reflected in national (Italy) and hospital (Royal Children's, Melbourne, Australia) guidelines that have been recently published.[13,102] The purpose of this article is to review the knowledge on diagnosis and treatment of childhood UTI and to discuss the changes that new guidelines have brought and the future perspectives.
