Having discussed the current achievements of radiological investigations on viral encephalitis in the present review, it is very clear that MR imaging is significantly more sensitive than CT scanning in detecting lesions, and the inclusion of DWI sequences to the routine imaging protocol of MRI examination obviously improves the sensitivity of the detection of regions affected by viral invasions. Moreover, the combination of DWI and ADC mapping obtained by MRI examination enables us to speculate on the pathological changes caused by viruses at the real-time basis of the disease process.
