This is one of many reports implicating microbial contamination of tattoos as a cause of skin and subcutaneous infections by M. chelonae. I have four conclusions: (1) Rash in a tattoo may arise from infection rather than allergy to a component. (2) If a biopsy of the rash reveals granulomatous inflammation, it may indicate infection rather than allergy to a component. (3) Contamination of ink can occur during its manufacture, so the practices of tattoo artists may be blameless. (4) Tattoo? No, thank you.
