Psychological Support

Premature ovarian failure is a very difficult diagnosis to accept. The hypo-oestrogenic symptoms and the connotations of the diagnosis of 'early menopause' can affect a young woman's view of her sexuality, femininity and self-image. Infertility may be the hardest aspect to come to terms with.[3] Women with POF have higher rates of sexual dysfunction and much higher depression rates than controls.[3,18,19] Women may not feel able to discuss the diagnosis with their usual support network of family, friends and partner. It is therefore essential that counselling is available, ideally from professionals with experience in this area. If fertility is an issue, it would be beneficial to involve a fertility counsellor who will be able to discuss the implications of egg donation and adoption. Information about support groups such as the Daisy Network UK (www.daisynetwork.org.uk) or the International Premature Ovarian Failure Association (www.pofsupport.org) may be useful.
