Auscultation of the Aortic Area (Right Upper Sternal Border)
When your examination of the pulmonic area is finished, move over to the right upper sternal border.
Listen to S1
S1 should be softer than S2 here.
Listen to S2
A muffled A2 or no A2 at all suggests aortic stenosis.
Listen to Systole
A murmur heard best here suggests aortic stenosis, aortic sclerosis, or asymmetric septal hypertrophy.
Listen to Early Diastole
A murmur heard best here suggests aortic regurgitation.
