Obesity and Disorders Associated With Hyperandrogenism
Hyperinsulinaemia,[2,66,67] even in the absence of diabetes, increases the production of androgens and reduces circulating SHBG in the obese.[6] This may be a contributory factor in the association of the following disorders with increasing BMI: acne, hirsuitism, androgenetic alopecia (in both sexes) and polycystic ovarian syndrome.[6,22,23,73,74] It should be noted that the anatomy of the sebaceous glands is not altered by obesity.[7]
