Leading the Way

Clinicians have an integral role as part of the healthcare team, in collaboration with environmental support and community resources, to prescribe health behavior change and guide lifestyle medicine. The recently defined field of lifestyle medicine, along with the 15 core competencies for this practice, is paving the way for healthcare providers to participate in a strategy to reverse the chronic disease epidemic in our country. These competencies highlight the importance of changes that clinicians can make. The 3 key areas of the competencies are reframing the clinical practice approach to prioritize healthy lifestyles for patients, providers adhering to healthy lifestyles themselves, and clinicians leading change in the medical system and in the community to support healthy lifestyles.
