Data Sources & Synthesis

A literature search was conducted using PubMed and MEDLINE databases from 1 January 1995 to 8 April 2009 using combined search terms of community-acquired pneumonia, fluoroquinolones, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, gemifloxacin, outpatient and primary care. The three respiratory fluoroquinolones (gemifloxacin, levofloxacin and moxifloxacin) were chosen based on their approved CAP indication by the US FDA.

All articles in English identified from the above search were evaluated. Reports were selected based on the epidemiology and diagnostic testing of CAP, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data of the three chosen fluoroquinolones, treatment guidelines recommended by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and American Thoracic Society (ATS), and relevant clinical trials of these antimicrobials in the treatment of outpatients with CAP.
