Putting It All Together

The key to effective lupus care can be summed up as follows:

1. Individualize care, focusing on choosing the best balance between disease control vs potential side effects.
2. Rule out infection or tumor or drug side effects as the cause of symptoms masquerading as "active lupus."
3. Monitor treatment side effects and positive effects carefully to help avoid side effects while controlling the SLE manifestation.
4. Understand the potential side effects and therapeutic effects of every medication you use.
5. Coordinate care between the rheumatologist and specialists in the given problem area.
