Combined Vaginal Ring

The combined vaginal ring containing etonogestrel and EE was approved for contraception by the FDA in 2002. A number of studies have evaluated weight changes and found small increases in weight of approximately 1 kg or less after 1 year of use.[47,52–57] However, in one shorter study over 1 kg was gained by participants in 3 months.[52] Where a comparative group of COC users was included, there were similar gains in both groups;[52,55] however, no nonhormonal user groups were included in these studies. Milson found changes in mean body weight of less than 0.5 kg in both NuvaRing® (Organon, Oss, The Netherlands) and COCs after 13 consecutive 28-day cycles of use. In addition, no changes in body composition were noted in this study.[47] Similarly, another study found small increases in weight of less than 1 kg.[54]
