Levonorgestrel IUD

The levonorgestrel IUD (LNG-IUD), marketed under the brand name Mirena (Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, PA, USA) works by suppressing the growth of the endometrium and impacting on cervical mucus. There is limited information on weight gain in LNG-IUD users, although weight gain is listed as a possible side effect in the Family Planning Global Handbook for Providers.[39] One study compared LNG-IUD users with copper-IUD and DMPA users, and found there was no difference in weight gain over a period of 5 years between the LNG-IUD and copper-IUD users. DMPA users, however, gained significantly more weight.[76]
