There is limited information on weight change in users of NET-EN.[3,28,66] This is probably due to the method being limited in distribution globally and not used in the USA or Europe. Of two studies undertaken with adults,[3,66] one found that NET-EN users gained slightly less weight at 12 months compared with DMPA, but this difference was not significant.[3] In a recent study, a mixed injectable contraceptive group (where women had used first DMPA-IM and then changed to NET-EN, or vice versa) gained an average of 6.2 kg over a 5-year follow-up period compared with significantly smaller increases in the COC and non-user groups.[28] The exclusive DMPA-IM users had gained more weight (7.2 kg) compared with the exclusive NET-EN users (5.9 kg), but this difference was not significant.
