Great improvements have been made by Medicare Part D in providing access to outpatient prescription drug coverage; however, about 5 million Americans still do not have Part D or equivalent drug coverage. Furthermore, the effects of additional MMA requirements and the PPACA on Part D plans remain to be seen. In the meantime, healthcare professionals need to stay updated regarding Part D coverage, encourage enrollment, and guide beneficiaries with Part D resources. In doing so, they will protect patients from high drug costs and optimize the quality of care delivered.
