Combination Topical Therapy

Topical treatments can be synergistic in their actions if used in combination to target microcomedones, comedones and inflammatory lesions. Recommendations are as follows:

  • Topical retinoid plus either a topical or oral antibiotic – produces faster results and significantly lower lesion counts. Discontinue the antimicrobial once the inflammatory lesions resolve and maintain with topical retinoid monotherapy;

  • Topical antibiotic plus either zinc or 5% BPO – provides a superior clinical improvement in combination and reduces the development of resistant strains of P. acnes.
