1. Methods of the Review

We searched the MEDLINE database from January 1996 to December 2009 using the key words 'HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor' and 'sudden cardiac death' as pertinent MeSH terms, and limited our search to English language studies involving human subjects. Studies involving statins with sudden cardiac death or VT/VF as a reported outcome were included. Review articles and trials that did not report effects of statins or sudden cardiac death/VT/VF outcomes were excluded. Two authors (AB, TC) independently reviewed the titles, abstracts, and full texts, if necessary, of all articles identified through the initial literature search. Articles were included by consensus and conflicting opinions were resolved by discussion. We reviewed prospective and retrospective studies, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), RCT sub-analyses, and meta-analyses. Pertinent cross-references from these articles were sought and included. Figure 1 depicts the process of article selection and table I provides full trial names.
