Summary

Both risk and outcome of pneumonia in older individuals are dependent on the functional and nutritional status of the patient. Overall health status, determined by factors, such as disability and comorbid disease causing immobilization and hypoalbuminemia, appear to be much more important in determining the risk of morbidity and mortality associated with pneumonia in the elderly than is age alone.
