Conclusions: HSV Infection--A Manageable, Incurable Disease

During the last 2 decades, genital herpes has received less attention in the medical community and in the media than AIDS. Although the disease is easily managed with antiviral therapy, viral infection is lifelong. Reactivation of latent disease and transmission of virus in the absence of clinically apparent disease are distinct possibilities. For this reason, the clinician must be attentive not only to medical treatment but also to patient counseling and education.
