Ultrasonography (US)

US is a portable, noninvasive, dynamic technique utilizing nonionizing radiation. It is inexpensive as compared to other three-dimensional imaging studies. However, its application is very limited in the trauma setting. In cases where the clinical picture is equivocal, US may allow evaluation of the extensor and flexor tendons to exclude tendon rupture. Additionally, US may be utilized to locate a nonradiopaque foreign body. A high-frequency transducer is a prerequisite for evaluation of the small anatomic structures of the wrist and hand.
