Introduction
Functional gastrointestinal disorders are commonly encountered disturbances of gut function that are characterized by symptoms arising in the mid and lower gut. This article will review control of gut sensorimotor functions relevant to the functional disorders; define functional bowel diseases and describe their economic burden and impact; review the pathophysiology of these conditions; and discuss novel pharmacologic approaches for controlling motor and sensory dysfunction.
