Various ophthalmic emergencies may be encountered by the non-ophthalmologist. Basic knowledge of the ocular anatomy and common vision-threatening conditions are necessary to properly diagnose and triage these patients. Although ophthalmology consultation is often required to manage complex ocular disorders, the non-ophthalmologist can play a critical role in preserving eyesight for patients who present with acute emergencies.
