Introduction

"Medicine here is not always the art of the possible. It sometimes consists of choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable." This is an excerpt of a letter from John Kenneth Galbraith, Ambassador to India, to President John F. Kennedy on March 2, 1962, as recorded in the Ambassador's journal in 1969 and published in The Columbia World of Quotations in 1996. Galbraith was referring to Bismarck's celebrated saying, "Politics is the art of the possible."
