Evidence-Based Practice: Understanding the Process

Introduction

The use of evidence-based practice (EBP) and national guidelines improves the quality of patient care and closes the gap between research outcomes and practice.^[1] Unfortunately research results rarely become integrated into practice in a timely manner. Balas and Boren^[2] report that it often takes up to 17 years for research to be incorporated into practice and in some cases the research findings may never be completely integrated. Translating the most recent evidence into practice is a challenge that affects multiple levels of the healthcare system. Nurse practitioners (NPs) should understand the concepts of EBP and ways to integrate research findings into the practice setting.
