Introduction
Emergency physicians (EPs) encounter a wide range of orthopedic ailments and sports-related injuries. The management of these injuries is often based on experience, anecdotal evidence, and, increasingly, evidence-based studies. There are still, however, many areas where a paucity of high-level evidence exists, lending little support for specific therapies.
Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain in adults. Although EPs commonly encounter this ailment in both sport- and non-sport-related activities, many are unfamiliar with its etiology, management, and treatment. Even with appropriate therapy, patients may not respond, leading to frustration for patient and physician alike.
