In the past 50 years, our ability to care for the severely injured eye has improved tremendously. In the past decade, significant strides have been made toward developing the field of ocular traumatology. In the next decades, we should be ready to evaluate current and future treatments in a rational, systematic fashion as we do with other ocular diseases, such as diabetes and glaucoma.
