Introduction: Why the Interest in Natural Remedies for Allergies?

Many individuals experience remarkable outcomes from natural remedies. Only recently, however, has Western medicine begun to appreciate the wisdom offered by natural or so-called complementary and alternative medical (CAM) treatments. This appreciation is driven primarily by consumer demand but also by the potential financial benefits in the marketplace. A Google search for the phrase "Allergy Treatment Alternatives" yields over 13 million hits, reflecting an enormous interest in alternative treatments for allergic rhinitis in particular. With approximately 50 million (and rising) Americans suffering from allergies or asthma, the extent of this interest is no surprise.
