As technology and research in health care expands, evidence-based practice (EBP) is becoming essential in delivering high quality pediatric patient care. With the abundance of information easily available through the Internet and its use as a knowledge tool, it is important that nurses become familiar with the available evidence and its application to daily patient care. Although some criticize EBP as being a fad that will soon fade into obscurity, many institutions have successfully invested the time, energy, and financial resources into the use of EBP to improve the quality of nursing care. In order for EBP to be successful, access to the information must be available, and the institution's administration must make a conscious and unified decision to incorporate this process into everyday clinical practice. EBP must be addressed in the institution's philosophy and mission as it relates to the provision of quality patient care provided by expert nurses and become a part of the culture of the organization. With the decision to integrate EBP into day-to-day patient care, the discussion is no longer "Should we?" rather, the focus becomes "How do we?" This is the first essential step toward a successful movement for EBP implementation in any clinical setting. This article begins by providing insight into the barriers that influence successful EBP implementation. An overview of the EBP review process that can be incorporated into all pediatric clinical settings and that includes an analysis of a clinical question using the evidence-based process is presented.
