Intracranial Meningiomas in Children: Report of 27 New Cases and Critical Analysis of 440 Cases Reported in the Literature

Abstract and Introduction

We accumulated 440 cases of intracranial meningiomas in patients under 16 years of age, and another 27 personal. This review confirms the existence of specific clinical features of spontaneous and radiation-induced meningioma in children. In addition, we discuss various points that suggest a more aggressive behavior of meningiomas in children than in adults.

Intracranial meningiomas in children and adolescents are rare tumors. In most large series, the incidence of meningiomas before the age of 16 years ranges from 0.4% to 4.6% of all primary brain tumors in this age group.[1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10] They account for 2% of all intracranial meningiomas.[2,10,11,12,13,14] In the past, meningiomas in children have been considered histologically more aggressive than those in adults.[12,15,16,17,18] However, recent studies do not support this assertion; thus, we analyze all of the possible factors responsible for this discrepancy. In addition, we describe the peculiar aspects of meningiomas in children on the basis of a large pool of data obtained from a review of 440 cases collected from the pertinent literature, to which we added 27 of our own cases.
